Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is Uganda’s most famous wilderness an ancient, mist-covered rainforest in the southwest of the country, home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park’s dense, tangled vegetation gives it its name, but for visitors, “impenetrable” quickly gives way to one of the most intimate wildlife encounters on earth: trekking through the forest to spend an hour with a wild gorilla family. Beyond gorillas, Bwindi shelters over 350 bird species, 220 butterfly species, and the Batwa people, whose ancestral home this forest once was. Split into four trekking sectors Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo Bwindi offers a different character and gorilla family experience depending on where you base yourself.
